Abstract:
This research at the grassroot level is aimed to look into: (1) the relative position of women vis-a-vis the process of making policies on the protection of women migrant workers; (2) what efforts they have made; (3) what efforts they potentially make based on their current positions; and (4) opportunities and challenges that may arise. Women activists in the Paguyuban Seruni in Banyumas is used as a model for women empowerment to conduct a series of protection activities for Indonesia women migrant workers. In-depth interview and observation were used to identify their roles. Through self-development, enriching process and optimal achievement, along with access to education and simple form of democratization, the women activists have given valuable inputs for the efforts of protecting women migrant workers at the grassroot level. There are limitations and problems, but they all become motivations for them to move forward and actually do something through a process where self and community achievement are interrelated. It is expected that this research will be able to provide inputs on the efforts worth making to push for the establishment and implementation of better protection mechanism for women migrant workers in the informal sector.
