Abstract:
In this study, a finite volume cell-centre method as space discretization with Runge Kutta fourth order for time integration is used in dam-break flow modeling. The unstructured curvilinear mesh is used in domain discretization, while hybrid formula is applied to the Runge Kutta time scheme in order to minimize the computational cost. Regarding to handle the numerical instabilities during computation process, the artificial viscosity is formed as the dissipation term by combining the Laplacian and Biharmonic operator. For open boundary, while water elevation is specified, the characteristic method is used to determine the velocity in x and y direction. Wall boundary condition is treated with normal velocity at the wall is zero condition.
Wet and dry treatment is applied especially for domain with initially dry condition by set a value limiter for minimum depth. Once the water depth reaches this value, the velocities in both directions are set to be zero. This model is built in source code written by Fortran 90 programming language and successfully applied for real case of dam break flow modeling. For some initially dry-bed cases, the wet and dry
treatment gives the good results.
