Interpreting Architectural Expression Of House Of Representative Building Case Study: East Java Provincial House of Representative Building In Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia

Abstract

This study aimed to gain an understanding about architectural expression, specifically in the architecture of Provincial House of Representative Building. The method used for this research consist of the followings: Firstly, to develop an understanding of architectural expression. At this stage, this understanding would also be elaborated with the design principles of provincial house of representative building. Based on this elaboration, a framework was developed to analyse the case study. Secondly, to describe the shape of the building as a whole as well as each of its element based on the predefined analytical framework. Thirdly, to interpret the architectural expression that appeared in every aspect of the built form. The study concluded that the architecture of Provincial House of Representative Building should be able not only to express monumentality and formality, but also refers to the icon of local culture, besides representing the ideas of democracy. The outputs of the research could enrich the vocabulary of architectural theory, by providing an in-depth understanding of architectural form and expression in general as well as in provincial house of representative building. This understanding could also serve as recommendations for both architects and stakeholders.
