dc.description.abstract In contemporary architecture, a certain tectonic character is important not only to accommodate the growing flexible function of a space, but also to resist disaster. Although the two requirement seem to be not related, but in vernacular buildings, the two are interconnected. These common tectonic characters are wood-frame structure –many are on stilt- with single-space room -in the case of Japan, with sliding or movable walls-, knocked down and sometimes portable. It is important to point out that this tectonic character of vernacular architecture emerge directly from the craftsmanship, and handed-down from generation to the next which contains the naming of the structural parts, how the joints are made, as well as the building phases and how the rituals performed in the construction process. Meanwhile, the tectonic character of contemporary architecture today emerged in relation to its material articulation and composition. Whilst the craftsmanship in contemporary architectural production mostly discuss in relation to architect’s design process, which includes drawing, model making, as well as, the technological advancement in architecture, both in the design process (digitalization), and the industrialized building construction process. Thus, this research tries to study the knock down and portability tectonic characters of Joglo –as one of Indonesia’s vernacular architecture which can accommodate the growing flexible function of a space, but also to resist disaster. Hopefully, the result of this study can be used for the creation of adaptable contemporary architecture of the future. en_US
